Bluetooth Marketing & Advertising FAQ's
What is proximity marketing?
Marketing to consumers within a 25 meter radius of your location who would otherwise rush past without noticing you. This medium is powered by Bluetooth mobile phone technology.
What is Bluetooth?
Bluetooth is a standard for radio hardware and operating software which is embedded into consumer electronics devices like laptops, mobile phones and headsets, digital cameras and printers. All Bluetooth devices can talk to each other using this standard and share information with each other.
How does Bluetooth work?
Bluetooth is basically a radio wave mini transmitter and receiver embedded into any electronic device. When one device detects another and they link, then they can send and receive data.
What kind of files can be sent?
All types of files are supported by Astracasting. You just need to make sure that the phones will support the file you are trying to send. Files supported by the pod are:
- Simple text message
- Animated image (GIF)
- Static image
- Image slideshow
- Music or Podcast (MP3)
- Video (MP4)
- Business card (vCard)
- Electronic coupon offering discounts
- Service information
- Calendar files, with reminders (vCal)
- Java apps. (.jad)
What is the difference between SMS and BMS (Astracasting messaging system)?
Short Message System (SMS or Text message) is offered by network providers and have a cost included to send or receive messages. The Astracasting messaging system does exactly the same as a text message; the best part is it’s FREE!. With BMS you don't need to know the customers mobile phone number to send the message, but with SMS you do.
How many mobile phones can the Astracasting reach at any one time?
It depends on how many mobile phones are in the area, and how many have their Bluetooth turned on. But it can reach 21 phones every 40 seconds if they are in the proximity area of the Astracasting.
What is the BPMS (Astracasting messaging system) Advantage over bulk SMS?
Bulk SMS and MMS are considered Spam in some countries (not permission based service) and have the disadvantage that they can’t include pictures (SMS). Another problem faced by text messaging is that they don’t recognise the location of the customer (LBS=Location Based Service), therefore can’t send location based information. BPMS is a Permission Based Service, where the customer has the option to decline or accept the message. If the message is accepted the chances of it being read are 85%. By using BPMS you know exactly where your customers are therefore you can send special promotions or last minute offers directly to them.
What frequency is Bluetooth technology using?
The Bluetooth world wide system works on a frequency of 2.45 Gigahertz, this band is referred to as ISM (Industrial, Scientific and Medical).
Do I need to have GPRS turned on?
No, it is not necessary to use GPRS to receive BPMS.
What is the connection speed?
Business version: Up to 1Mbps maximum speed. About 723kbps is the average speed.
What happens if the customer does not accept the file?
Our system is a PBS (Permission Based Service). This means the customer always has the right to deny files; the pod then remembers this and will NOT send out the same message again to that phone. However once the pod gets reset the memory is wiped and will re-send massages again to all phones.
Do you need any connection to the local telecom providers?
No there is no need to be connected to Telecom providers. The message comes from the Astracasting NOT from the Telecom network.
Is there a limit of messages you can send?
NO. However, make sure not to overload your customers with messages as the Astracasting will become less effective and the customer will not respond to the messages sent. We suggest on having only one or two messages on the pod at one time and changing it every 2 weeks to a month.
How much does it cost for the phone to receive the message from the Astracasting?
The answer is NOTHING.
What power does the Astracasting require?
Either 220/240 V, a 12V (cigarette lighter) or lithium battery.
Does Bluetooth interfere with other machinery?
Not at all. Bluetooth delivers a low range (tagged) signal which has been developed specifically NOT to interfere with any other equipment.
Does is keep stats?
Yes it can store data showing how many phones received the messages and how many opened them.
What does the server need?
240 v power supply standard three pin socket or 12v DC in car power lead or our Lithium rechargeable battery pack.
How big is the Bluetooth server?
The size of our Bluetooth pod is 140mm deep, by 220mm wide, by 35mm thick and it weighs just 450g !!!.
Is this Spam?
No, anti spam laws brought out in 2006 demand that consumers get to choose whether or not to receive these messages. The messages we send out, all ask for user permission and no viruses can be transmitted.
What is the range of the Bluetooth pod?
100 meters/300 feet. The pod range is more than the range of the mobile devices that it communicates with, so it is limited to their individual ranges, the average mobile phone has a range of around 25 meters.
